Greetings Faculty, Staff, Students, Alumni, and Friends
It is with great honor and pleasure that I come back to the front office of this great department to provide a smooth transition in this critical time of the history of this department. When I was recruited in 1990 to lead this department the university was fairly young, enrollment was less than one half of the current enrollment, and the civil engineering program in the department was in an infancy stage.
Over the years, the department continued its growth in line with the university growth not only in numbers but also in statue. Twenty-one (21) full time tenure track faculty, nine hundreds (900) undergraduate students and one hundred and seventy five (175) graduate students are the assets of this department. The most recent ABET visit accredited our three programs and the most recent change in the department name reflects the new thrust in growing the construction engineering program.
The department currently has two research directions (Civil Infrastructure Systems and Hydro-Environmental Systems), several research centers (e.g., Center for Advanced Transportation Systems Simulation, Storm Water Management Academy, and Environmental Systems Engineering Institute), and laboratories (e.g., Structures and Structural Health Monitoring Laboratories, and Coastal Hydroscience Analysis, Modeling and Predictive Simulations Laboratory). Collectively the department has over $5 million in research expenditures in the past year and has been one of the leading research units at the university.
The American Society of Engineering Education reports ranked the College of Engineering and Computer Science at UCF in the top 29 nationwide in terms of undergraduate studentsÕ productivity and the average ranking of the department over the last seven years was 28. The US News World Report ranked the college in the top 70 colleges nationwide in terms of attractiveness for graduate enrollment and the department rank is 75 among its peers.
Although the student to faculty ratio continues to be high we strongly believe that once this global recession ends, central Florida will be the fastest to recover and UCF will gain its lost resources back. I invite you to continue your support of our department and encourage you to take an active role in its excellent academic and research endeavors.
